SAAM: The Details You Should Know
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, also known as SAAM. In honor of this very important month, we’re featuring this guest post from our friends at End Rape on Campus (EROC).
Every 98 seconds, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. Over half of these people are between the ages of 18 and 34. That equates to 1 out of every 6 women experiencing attempted or completed rape, and transgender students are at an even higher risk for sexual violence.1

What You Can Do
Rape is a topic that every college in America is currently grappling with. During SAAM, there will be plenty of slogans, hashtags and ad campaigns designed to shine a spotlight on sexual violence. But it doesn’t stop at awareness. In order to really address sexual violence, we need to shift from awareness to action, combatting rape and sexual assault in our everyday lives. That’s why we’ve created our 30 Days of Activism initiative.
Here at EROC, we’ve compiled ways for you to be an activist all month long. With our 30 Days of Activism initiative, you’ll have concrete steps you can take every day to educate yourself, be a better ally, and make a difference. Whether you’re an artist, a speaker, a writer, or someone with a passion for justice, we have the tips and tools you need to make this a meaningful and productive month. If you need some direction to figure out where your talents align with the initiative, check out our page on skills-based activism.
Being an activist isn’t a one-and-done deal. We aren’t going anywhere once April ends, and we urge you to continue your activism as well. Taking action doesn’t mean you have to be an expert in gender-based violence or a seasoned activist. Everyone can play some part in ending sexual violence.
